Living in Mexico, does not mean giving up modern conveniences such as shopping and fine dining. The capital city of Mérida, has everything you could possibly ask for, including a side of charm. Getting my vote for the happiest city in Mexico, and quite possibly North America, Mérida offers state-of-the-art facilities to meet everything from cultural to medical needs. Respecting both sophistication and relaxation, this one-of-a-kind city offers an energy that beckons travelers from across the globe. Rest assured, your Mérida lifestyle can be as hip or laid back as you want it to be, but don’t take my word for it, visit to find out for yourself.

1- Shopping. With numerous shopping centers, both residents and travelers will never have to go without. Several plazas carry the name brands many are accustomed to, including: Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, Sears, Radio Shack, Sally Beauty Supply, and many more. Liverpool is the equivalent department store of a Dillards or Macys, and Soriana and Sanborn offer everyday conveniences like toothbrushes, bakeries, cameras, clothing, and luggage. In addition to the malls, you will find Walmart, Sam’s Club, liquor stores, and street vendors. A must see is the Merida market for fresh produce, local products and spices.

2- Dining. The depth and variety of culinary options and exploration is incredible in Mérida. Top rated restaurants include steakhouses like Trotters, to the local flavor of Chaya Maya. La Tratto Santa Lucia offers amazing pizza and late night dining options. As a food destination, breakfast and lunch options are at your fingertips. Hidden courtyard cafes like Cafe Creme and Cafe La Boheme offer treats, cheeses and delicious coffee.

3- Arts & Culture. The theatre scene in Merida is splendid. From ballet to comedy, this city has it all. A world class symphony, museums, cathedrals and churches, and Mayan archaeological sites will satisfy the need for a cosmopolitan city with colonial influence. The Plaza historic district is home to The Cathedral, only one of Mérida’s many interesting sites. Consider a stroll down Paseo de Montejo, visit Palacio Municipal, or explore the Palacio de Gobierno.

4- Nightlife. Dining late is part of the culture in Mérida., making nightlife abundant in this vibrant city. From local dance clubs to street vendors this Yucatan capital has something for everyone. The Irish Pub, Hennessy’s, is a local watering hole located on Paseo de Montejo. Live outdoor music is a popular scene in most town squares where families and friends gather and lovers exchange conversation in kissing chairs.

5- Healthcare. Major hospitals and clinics are readily available in Mérida. Becoming known for medical tourism, American trained physicians see thousands of patients in clean, modern facilities. In addition, this city has an abundance of pharmacies, where local doctor visits are often complimentary. Not to mention, many visitors come for dental work for extreme cost savings compared to the states.

6- Beach Access. Beckoning all visitors to MéridaMérida., is the beautiful turquoise coastline of the Yucatan. With a climate resembling Florida, beaches are visited year round by both visitors and locals. Located within 30 minutes of the city is the beach town of Progreso, serving as the summer escape for many Meridians, and a cruise ship destination and shipping port throughout the year. Those looking for a quieter beach going experience, may choose to visit Sisal, a quaint fishing village approximately 30-40 minutes from the city.

7- Safety. This city is arguably Mexico’s safest. With a deep respect for each other, regardless of class, in Mérida there is a sense you are among close family and friends. Learn more about safety facts here.
