5 Must Have Experiences In Merida

Mexico, Cancun or Chichen Itza is probably one of the first things to come to mind when speaking of the Mayans from the Yucatan Peninsula. Preserving this ancient history and culture is important to many in this Mexican state. Mayans carry a sense of pride. Proud of their heritage, families and work. There is a lot to be gained from visiting and getting to know those that live and protect this region of the world. Understanding their uniqueness and respect for each day is both inspiring and encouraging.

Merida offers something for everyone, including: History, Arts, Architecture, Crafts, Theatre, Culinary Delights, Retail Therapy, Healthcare Facilities and close Proximity to Unspoiled Beaches. These 5 Mayan experiences will help you appreciate the gift Merida provides to each of its visitors.

Have Coffee With a Local. Not only is the coffee delicious, the hospitality of the city and its people is incredibly unique. The locals share a deep roted respect for themselves and their surroundings, creating a welcoming environment for anyone visiting. Watch the smiles on the faces of locals. Fall in love with the grins on the children who honor their parents. Take a deep breath and observe. Live in the moment and soak up the Mayan belief of appreciating each day. Recommended: Cafe Creme, Cafe Chocolate

2. Eat a Traditional Mayan Dish. I am not talking about a bean and cheese burrito from Taco Bell. Hand-made corn tortillas filled with comforting goodness could replace my cravings for my Grandma’s chicken and gravy or Southern chicken and waffles. From watching the locals hand press tortillas, to tasting the influence of Mayan spices in timeless traditional recipes, this is a menu not to miss. Recommended: La Chaya Maya

3. Visit Uxmal. Located 62 km from Merida, this ancient city offers some of the most prominent architecture Mayan history. Buildings known for the size and decor compliment The Pyramid of the Magician. This history rich city is often dismissed in comparison to Chichen Itza, however provides a deeper more profound experience for visitors.

4. Explore the Architecture. Ask questions. Learn of the hand craftsmanship and attention to detail the Mayans used in their building process. Numerous churches, streets, buildings, monuments, and homes prove the pride and respect the Mayans have for their culture. Did you know palapa roofs, most known as thatched roofs to Americans, originated in this region and are still used in modern day building? One of my favorite architectural characteristics include the expansive, open air courtyards found in the homes, restaurants, and businesses of Merida. Recommended: City Bus Tour, Paseo De Montejo,Merida Cathedral

5. Sit in a Kissing Chair. Face to face with a friend, loved one, or perhaps stranger will create opportunity to be present in  conversation. Distraction free dialogue encourages interaction in the town squares provided as gathering places for family and friends. Merida is filled with these city parks lined with kissing chairs. Embrace the moments given to you in this historic and beautiful city called Merida. Recommended: Centro, Sisal
